Top 10 Romantic Comedies

What are the top 10 romantic comedies of all time? That’s something most romantics would surely love to know so here is list which has been prepared by combining the box office earnings of these films from both domestic and international sources. How many have you seen?

Romantic comedy movies are a sub-group of romantic movies and are notable for being light-hearted and having plots that are often humorous. The path of true love may be thwarted, temporarily, by errors, accidents and coincidences, or by differences in social standing. ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘Pretty Woman’ are examples of romantic comedies.

The romantic comedies are contrasted with romantic drama, a further sub-group of romance films in which the main premise of the movie is concerned with the romantic attraction between the leading characters but not in a funny or humorous way. The attraction often causes them to struggle with significant questions about their lives, such as “should I remain with my current partner?” and “what am I doing with my life?” Dramatic impact is created by the emotional expression of those involved. ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Notebook’ are examples of romantic drama.

The listing below differs slightly from those top domestic earners as some which did well at home performed poorly at theaters in other countries. Others boosted their earnings considerably in the overseas market and greatly improved their ranking.

For instance, Pretty Woman, whilst 4th in domestic earnings, at $178 million, also pulled in a whopping $285 million in the foreign market to grab the top spot overall.

Overseas sales were also extremely important for Notting Hill (with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts) as it earned ‘only’ $116 on the U.S. domestic market but more than double that ($248 million) internationally to leap up to 7th place.

The Top 10 Romantic Comedies – based on gross earnings (U.S. domestic + international):

1. Pretty Woman (1990) – $463 million
2. Sex And The City (2008) – $415 m
3. What Women Want ((2000) – $374 m
4 There’s Something About Mary ((1998) – $370 m
5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) – $369 m
6. Hitch (2005) – $368 m
7. Notting Hill (1999) – $364 m
8. The Proposal (2009) – $315 m
9. Runaway Bride (1999) – $309 m
10. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) – $299 m

The queen of romantic comedies is clearly Julia Roberts. She starred in four of the top 10 movies listed above – Pretty Woman (1990), Notting Hill (1999), Runaway Bride (1999) and My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997). The 90s were clearly good for her. Cameron Diaz managed to star in two – There’s Something About Mary (1998) and My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997).

A high production budget is not always a guarantee of success, nor is it a good indicator as Pretty Woman had a budget of only $14 million – Julia Roberts was relatively unknown at the time and her fee for that movie was only $300,000, being mainly known for her role in Steel Magnolias (1989). She was not the first choice for the lead in Pretty Woman, gaining the role only after a number of other, better known, actresses had turned it down as ‘too sexist’ or ‘degrading to women’.

Another movie which far surpassed expectations was My Big, Fat Greek Wedding (2002). It had a budget of only $5 million and earned $241 million at the U.S. box office alone (far surpassing Pretty Woman on $178 million), more than any other romantic comedy. It also earned a respectable $127 million in overseas sales. While not as successful internationally as Pretty Woman (which managed $285 million), it allowed MBFGW to secure the number 5 spot for a modest outlay.

Romantic comedies are hugely popular with the cinema going public, as well as home viewers. A list of the top-rated and successful romantic movies can be a very useful guide in viewer selection.

3D Technology in Modern Movies

Movies are our greatest source of entertainment. People from all ages, children to old age do find relief and pleasure watching movies. There have been many value additions to the modern movies that have attracted more audiences to the theatres. 3D technology has been one among those prominent value additions to our movies. In 1844, stereoscope was invented by David Brewster which could help in taking 3D photographic images. After some years Louis Duboscq improved this invention. He took picture in 3D of Queen Victoria and displayed the picture in Great Exhibition of 1851. This portrayal became very famous through the world and the origin of 3D technology can be traced to this picture. From there on 3D technology was in practice and after some stage this technology found its way into the movies as well.

At present 3D technology is the part and parcel of our film industry. Full time 3D films are much common nowadays and there are absolutely no movies that don’t use any 3D technology in the Hollywood. There is a significant increase in the number of 3D movies and games released year by year. The modern technology improvements have made 3D more accessible to the masses. The old green and red paper glasses were replaced by plastic frames with green tinted lenses. These glasses fit easily and are more just like ordinary eyeglasses. The technology has improved a lot and it gives you real life experience. You would duck yourselves when you see something on the screen thinking for a second that’s real. The theatres that show 3D movies give maximum comfort to the audiences who before were finding it very hard to kill the time in theatres. The risen popularity in 3D technology is evident from the fact that most of the previous year blockbusters from Hollywood were mostly in 3D format.

3D technology is now mostly used in the Hollywood. It kick started from the early 2000, were many big studios released full time 3D movies. In the year 2003, Oscar winning director, James Cameroon released a film Ghosts of the Abyss in 3D format. This is the first ever full length 3D feature film using IMAX. This movie made use of the latest technology Reality Camera System which used the latest HD video cameras. This technology was much accepted among other Hollywood directors and many films were then filmed using this camera. It includes ‘Aliens of the Deep’, ‘The Adventures of Shark boy, ‘Spy Kids 3D: Game over’. Etc. ‘The polar Express’, which was released in the year 2004, was the first animated 3D movie. This movie was so successful in the theaters such that a series of 3D animation films followed it.

The year 2010 can be called as a year of 3D technology. We saw many big budgeted films like ‘Avatar’ being released in the 3D format. Also sky television UK, started attempts for a 3D television as well. So it’s very sure that the days to come are that of 3D technology.

Best Movies Ever

I see myself as a very big movie fan and I am always following up on the greatest movies and rating them.

I actually enjoy all categories of movies but my favorite categories are definitely comedies that can strengthen my laughter muscles and psychological thrillers that give you goose bumps all over the body. I recently watched shutter Island with Leonardo De Caprio and it was truly a beautiful and well played movie, I really enjoy these kinds of movies with several twists and turns along the way.

I have noticed and you will probably agree with this, that if you are an avid movie watcher you slowly learn to predict the endings and twists of movies that are not very well written and very well played. Therefore I am really thrilled whenever a movie manages to surprise me and give me goose bumps.

Another movie I can really recommend is “Running Scared”, I had never heard about this action/thriller movie before one of my great buddies recommended it to me and I must tell you that I was really impressed. The movie has a very distinct style and effects that you rarely see and the story was really great and exciting, with the fear of spoiling the movie I will just go ahead and recommend you to check out this movie for yourself.

My ultimate favorite is still “Secret Window” with Johnny Depp. It is a psychological thriller and is a original Stephen King movie, Johnny Depp plays his very hard role perfectly and the twists in this movie are simply incredibly breath taking.

If you are leaning more towards the gangster genre of movies there is no doubt that “Training Day” with Denzel Washington is high up on the list. This movie depicts the lives of corrupt cops in the mean gang infested streets and Denzel is a great actor as always.

Speaking of Denzel Washington I can definitely recommend his movie “Déjà Vu”, it is part science fiction and part action and has some really cool twists and turns along the way. While we are in the science fiction genre, you have to make sure you check out “next” by Nicolas Cage, in this movie Nicolas Cage can see two minutes into the future and this leads to some very interesting situations and creates a great overall plot for the rest of the movie. Make sure to check out my recommendations, I am sure you will enjoy them.

The Hurt Locker Movie Review

War is ugly. War is dirty. War is not needed. And yet we fight. The Hurt Locker is a fantastic depiction of this very ugly drug and what it does to regular men.

It is the summer of 2004 the two men of Bravo Company Sergeant Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge witness the gruesome death of their commander Staff Sergeant Thompson as he was trying to disarm an Improvised Explosive Device or IED. These homemade bombs are the reason for the deaths of not only the American soldiers but also thousands of Iraqi’s.

Enter Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) who takes over Bravo Company. James does not work by any rules; he does not care too much for the protocol and often swaggers his way into high pressure situations. This bravado attitude of his scares the daylights out of the other two members of his team who want nothing more than the safe termination of their tour. With just over month left in their tour each day gets the closer to death and James’ attitude doesn’t really help.

After a few hiccups James manages to melt the ice and the men of Bravo Company become a formidable team. Being in close proximity with death on a daily basis soon takes its toll on James. He throws caution to the winds and ends up wiping the lines between heroism and bravado.

More than being a mere well crafted film The Hurt Locker redefines the very manner in which war films would be made this point onwards. One can already see the impact of Kathryn Bigelow’s instant masterpiece on war films in Green Zone. A visible lack of political agenda makes The Hurt Locker more compelling and visceral. Based on an article and later a script by Mark Boal, Kathryn Bigelow stark and realistic approach makes The Hurt Locker intelligently riveting.

Jeremy Renner, who notched up an Oscar nod for this role of William James, gets the tightrope walk of his character. Bigelow extracts a fine performance from not only her lead but also the supporting act that feature some interesting cameos by Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes.

Many have hailed The Hurt Locker as a near perfect film and they aren’t off the mark. With high level visual and emotional intensity that has not been witnessed in a film for some years now, The Hurt Locker depicts the edgy real battles fought both internally and externally. This is a must watch film.

Cast: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse and Evangeline Lilly.

Top Kids Movies – A Short List

The typical parent watches a lot of children’s movies, while their kids are growing up. Many of these movies are wonderful, others are not. The best films… the one’s that make the top kids movie lists, are those that teach an underlying lesson of some sort.

Two such children’s films are How to Train Your Dragon and Horton Hears a Who. Both of these movies are about the importance of friendship and following your dreams, even in the face of adversity.

How to Train Your Dragon, based on the Cressida Crowell book of the same name, is the story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and the injured dragon he befriends. Hiccup, a teenage Viking, struggles with the realization that he really doesn’t want to learn how to fight dragons, after all… a true Old Viking tradition.

While his friends are busy perfecting their dragon slaying skills, Hiccup and the dragon he calls “Toothless” go about building a friendship and soon discover that there is usually more to a Viking (or dragon) than meets the eye.

Horton Hears a Who is another recommendation for a complete top kids movies list. It’s based on a classic Dr. Suess book and is the story of Horton (the elephant) and his attempt to save the tiny town of Whoville, while facing opposition from all of the other animals in the Jungle of Nool.

Horton accidentally discovers the town, on a speck, on a clover. His mission is to move Whoville to a safe place, before it’s too late. Because no one else believes that the town actually exists, Horton faces a more difficult journey than he ever thought possible.

There are SO many other top kids movies, out there, just waiting to become part of every movie collection. Check the list to see what you’re missing!
